Defensive Driving

The purpose of the course is to give Louisiana drivers a general understanding of the dangers of driving, key defensive driving techniques and practices, and behaviors that minimize the chances of being involved in an accident.
Learning Objectives

By alerting the participant to what they will learn, it establishes a short-term mental outline and cues them to the important concepts that will be presented. When those concepts come up, it sets off a mental note alerting them to key concepts, helping to embed those ideas within long-term memory.
Up-to-Date Content

Background information is regularly updated to reflect industry standards and current rulings so the participant gets the most recent interpretation of controversial issues.
Presenting Key Ideas

By ordering key ideas in a logical group, participants are able to mentally codify key concepts that are linked—this helps establish long-term memory and recall of related ideas. Concepts are presented from a variety of perspectives so that viewpoints are balanced and well represented.
Introspective Approach

Item coverage via a “self-check” list helps drivers relate personally to the lessons and instills “memory triggers” for later recall. This type of instruction helps them make the mental transition from a cognitive mode to a physical motor skill.
Illustrations

Animated illustrations are designed to hold participant’s attention and help them to focus on course learning objectives.
Reviews

Embedded assessments at key milestones in the course help the participant keep track of their progress and give them realistic feedback on content mastery. It also alerts them to areas that they need to review.
Navigation

Clear directions allow the participant to know where they are at all times in the course. This is also important for self-pacing as it allows the participant to return to the point where they stopped during natural interruptions.
Realistic

Realistic vignettes place the participant in familiar driving situations that can be stressful, yet provide them with coping strategies that diffuse potential conflict, enabling them to avoid problems.
Bullet List

Key points are rendered in bold as they are discussed, helping the participant focus and concentrate. It reinforces content mastery.
The Final Exam

At the conclusion of the program, a final examination is administered. The final examination covers each of the course’s five modules. Eighty percent of the questions must be answered correctly.
